The quality of the switches and the keys - the active components, as it were, is still very good. Yes, the housing looks old school, and perhaps a little bargain basement, but you'll probably not be looking at the 'board that much during actual work. And that's what these things are for, make no mistake. They're not gaming keyboards. They're not show-off pieces. They're workhorses. I've had no issues with the reliability on mine, and I'm a fairly high volume typist who is guilty of "typing angry" as I begin to go quickly. I've had a lot of back and forth over the years about which keyboard I prefer, but for the last year or so, my go-to for high volume typing has been the Unicomp. <br /><br />Cheers, <br /><br />PatrickPatrick M. I've had a Unicomp for a couple of years and my summary is it's a Model M with a bit of corner cutting and poor quality control. The normal (small) keys are fine, but the larger ones, which require a secondary guide mechanism are wobbly or don't function smoothly. I've had to do field fixes on both the spacebar and the + key on my numeric keypad to make them function acceptably. Unicomp did offer to RMA it when the spacebar failed, but I would have had to pay for and deal with the hassle of shipping it. If I had to do it over gain, I would have purchased from a site that offers reconditioned Model Ms. OTOH, Unicomp now sells through Amazon, so if it doesn't work out of the box, it's much less of a pain to return and if you've never used a buckling spring, you won't notice the small shortcomings relative to the original.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37334857.post-5305563638725168292016-08-18T00:59:40.157-06:002016-08-18T00:59:40.157-06:00Nice blog. I think the primary element is that IBM believed in creating products that were built to the very highest standard, and that were designed for commercial/industrial duty cycle. They were, as a result, very expensive to purchase. <br /><br />On my primary home machine, I've currently cycled out the Unicomp and gone with a tenkey-less keyboard with MX Black keys. I like the shorter reach for the mouse, especially for gaming. I find that I'm just a bit faster on an MX switch board, and that they seem to be a little less fatiguing over the long haul.<br /><br />Thanks for your comment, and happy typing.<br /><br />Regards, PatrickPatrick M. I also have two meticulously restored original IBM Model M boards, so I'm in a good position to make comparisons.<br /><br />The Unicomps are both perfectly serviceable and type well. As others have mentioned, the cosmetic finishing leaves something to be desired; there's plastic flash on the keys, mold marks on the cases, and the key markings are not as crisp and consistent as IBM. But from a functional standpoint they're just fine, and almost as good as the IBMs. Almost. The IBM boards just feel a bit tighter and crisper to use, and of course they have none of the cosmetic flaws. So I prefer the originals, but the Unicomps get a lot of use too, and I can go just as fast on them. <br /><br />I also have a Das Professional with Cherry Browns. I gave it to my wife after I got my first real Model M. It's very nice, and very fast, but I like the feel of typing on the M better.dwasifarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09090538627904323456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37334857.post-79909061987198128482015-12-31T18:26:40.318-07:002015-12-31T18:26:40.318-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.dwasifarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09090538627904323456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37334857.post-25608865842045778552015-12-17T22:33:49.961-07:002015-12-17T22:33:49.961-07:00Adrian,

I have found mine to be a perfectly reliable instrument over the time I've owned it. I did notice that there was a certain level of iffy work in regard to the plastic, but have found this to be a purely cosmetic issue on my example. The Unicomp people have always been very interested to hear what I had to say, and seemed nice. I suppose that experiences and opinions vary. While it is in no way a "slick" or "pretty" keyboard, it has done a deal of work for me. After a few years of using it, I would say that, on balance, I probably prefer the Das Keyboard with the MX Brown switches that I use at work. Then again, there is something satisfying about using a buckling spring 'board. It rewards a firm hand, and has a crunchy sound all its own. I remain pleased with the purchase. I would continue to say, as long as you know what you're getting, it is still a reasonable purchase for those in the market. First mechanical? No. Gaming 'board? Heck. Fricken. No. Still, for pure typing, it gives me the feels, reminding me of the IBM Selectric I learned on.Patrick M. I received a new Ultra Classic USB 104 keyboard that was so badly bowed it wouldn't sit flush on a desk. The upper and lower frames are also so poorly misaligned that the case clicks every time any pressure is applied to it. I was shocked to find out Unicomp considers these normal and indicated that they are using very old tooling that is producing warped and severely misaligned case/frames. What a lousy company! They only offered a partial refund and want to charge a $5 re-inspection fee, charge me for return shipping and not refund original shipping costs -- all the while knowing they are manufacturing garbage with their worn out tooling. Stay far away from this "Made in U.S.A garbage".
